It seems like the topic of mentoring has come up a lot for me this year. Jane Chaney, who worked for the likes of Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, Disney and the Orlando CVB, who has taught me a lot about the tourism industry in our own state, is retiring in November. Barbara Mack, a professor who shared a wealth of knowledge about reporting, media law and the First Amendment and inspired countless journalists such as me at my alma mater, passed away suddenly last week. Both of these women have impacted my career in subtle and large ways.
Earlier this year, it was a treat to interview two mentor pairs for a “Meet My Mentor” article that appeared in our Summer 2012 issue, which led me to writing a similar piece for sister publication Minnesota Meetings + Events. One of the senior planners I interviewed for the Colorado story, Amy Drotar who works for Polycom Inc., is heading up the new mentor program introduced this week by Meeting Professionals International Rocky Mountain Chapter. If you have wanted to share lessons learned along the way or locate a mentor but haven’t found the right person, here’s your chance!
Another neat MPIRMC effort is “MPI on the Road,” essentially a western Colorado reception for meeting and hospitality industry planners and suppliers. Being a western Colorado resident myself, it’s nice to have an industry meeting in our neck of the woods on Sept. 26, 5 – 7 p.m. at Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort & Spa.
Leaves are changing in the mountains, so get out and enjoy!
