While Steamboat is known as Ski Town USA, winter is not the only season to visit this mountain destination. With festivals, concerts, and activities galore, spring is a season to beat in Steamboat Springs.

Springalicious

To celebrate the end of the 2016/2017 winter season, Steamboat Ski Area is hosting the Steamboat Springalicious Festival. From April 1-16, visitors can enjoy Colorado bluebird sunny days, a ton of fun events, free music concerts and of course, the last of the famed Champagne Powder.

The traditional Cardboard Classic will take place on April 15 for its 37th year. The hilarious event has competitors racing down Stampede on homemade cardboard crafts made only from cardboard, glue, string, paint, tape, balloons and other fun decorations. The race takes place at 11 a.m., preceded by a judging ceremony on anything from creativity to engineering.

Celebrate closing day with the Splashdown Pond Skimming Championships on Sunday, April 16. Brave – and a little foolish – skiers and riders attempt to cross an icy pond in crazy costumes. Men, women, children and senior citizens are all welcome to try on a first come, first serve basis. The pond skimming begins at 1 p.m. and award ceremony will immediately follow the end of the event. Participants will be judged on their costume, distance, style, crowd response and air.

Other events include Toes on the Nose Surf Jam, a time to show your surf style on the biggest “wave” in Steamboat; Red Ball Express, a race of more than 100 exercise balls racing down a course; and Cody’s Challenge, an endurance ski race across the Steamboat Ski Area.

Bud Light Rocks the ‘Boat

Returning for its 18th year, the Bud Light Rocks the ‘Boat Free Concert Series offers a wide variety of music for visitors and locals to enjoy. Located on the Steamboat Stage in Gondola Square, this six-part series will bring artists like Anderson East, Con Brio and The Wailers to Steamboat, highlighting genres from soul, to funk, to reggae. Music starts at 3:30 p.m. on various Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month.

Hotel Happenings

Concerts, ski races and pond skimming competitions are all fun and exciting, but sometimes it’s also nice to stay in and enjoy activities at the hotel. Many hotels in the area, like the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, implement new offers for spring. To focus on wellness, guests can take free yoga classes. To boost creativity, groups might want to try wine and paint classes. And for the kids, activities like movie nights, craft classes and free snow cones will keep them occupied and content. Spring is a great time to get out and explore everything that Steamboat Springs has to offer, and there’s no better way than starting right in the hotel.

Colorado properties, suppliers, and meeting and event planners gather each year at Destination Colorado’s Front Range Trade Show, held this year on Dec. 1 at EXDO Event Center in Denver. The organization’s annual meeting and awards were held immediately before the show.

It’s back, the National Association of Catering & Events Denver Chapter’s annual holiday mixer, Naughty or NACE held on Dec. 13. Attendees were encouraged to take the recently added commuter rail line to the year-old The Westin Denver International Airport for holiday cocktails, food, entertainment and the opportunity to toast the end of the year in style.

Recently, the Colorado Meeting + Events editorial advisory board shared musings about the state of the meetings and events industry in Colorado. This annual conversation with industry pros from around the state is always thought-provoking, candid and a back-and-forth about challenges and opportunities. One key topic was what differentiates Colorado from other states.

The advisory board concluded that many times, getting a group outside in Colorado’s fresh air and beautiful surroundings can be just what the meeting productivity doctor ordered.
