Annual Survey Reveales American to Top $100 Billion in Vacation Spending

Allianz Global Assistance released their Allianz Travel Insurance Vacation Confidence Index on July 5, revealing that Americans are estimated to spend more than $100 billion of spending on summer vacations this summer. Allianz defined a vacation as a "leisure trip of at least a week to a place that is 100 miles or more from home." The Vacation Confidence Index measures Americans' confidence in their ability to take a summer vacation, showing that the projected summer spending for this year is $101.1 billion, compared to 2016's $89.9 billion, a 12.5 percent increase from 2016.

Denver Breaks Tourism Record

The city of Denver has broken its own record, earning $5.3 billion in tourism revenue in 2016. Based on the Longwoods International annual visitor profile study, Denver welcomed 31.5 million visitors (including 17.3 million overnight visitors) and is rising as a top tourism destination.

Healthy Living & Travel Can Go Hand-in-Hand

Traveling for meetings can take a hit on healthy eating and fitness habits. In Colorado, one of the healthiest and fittest states in the nation, that doesn’t have to be true. Meeting and event planners can help attendees stay fit by simply asking the hotel or venue they are booking and the local tourism office or convention and visitor bureau what options are available or by planning activities for the few hours before registration is underway and in the morning before meetings get started.

Times a Changing in Colorado’s Lodging Scene

Times are a changing. In Crested Butte, Colorado, where I live and work, two longtime businesses have recently changed ownership or management (including Cristiana Guesthaus, a European-style inn) or are morphing into something new. I also discovered that our friendly community chiropractic office and has a new location in hip new digs down the street. Just like in communities, things rarely stay the same in the meetings and events industry, but this is especially true here and now in regard to Colorado’s lodging sector.

VisitPITTSBURGH has developed a fun promotional campaign to get locals more involved with its “Pittsburgh. Mighty. Beautiful.” theme and tagline. The organization kicked-off the “Mighty. Beautiful.” campaign and contest at its Annual Meeting luncheon by asking attendees to think of a third word to describe the city, e.g. Mighty. Beautiful. Welcoming. Among the words being used to describe Pittsburgh were: Inspiring. Proud. Reinvented. Welcoming. Legendary. Innovative.
