One of my favorite things about spending time in Denver is exploring new options for groups and seeing existing venues that successfully keep things fresh and interesting. An excursion to The Mile High City in mid-May meant staying at Kimpton Hotel Born located steps from Denver Union Station, roaming around Larimer Square that has big plans of its own on the horizon and stopping on a prime corner of that district for dinner at Tamayo.

Many of the latest hotel additions in Denver are impressive because they are distinct, not a cookie-cutter version of another hotel somewhere else on the planet. Hotel Born joins the ranks of other recently opened properties that fit this description like The Maven and The Source Hotel + Market Hall in downtown and Halcyon and soon-to-open Jacquard in Cherry Creek North.

I like the local art that is being integrated into the looks of these new hotels and lobby spaces that are fun to hang out in and bring people together, plus distinct experiences like free passes to the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver only a block away from Hotel Born (consider booking the rooftop café and terrace for an event). Also, the provision of upper-floor outdoor spaces with views like the Hotel Born’s Nordic Terrace that can be utilized for receptions, dinners, meeting breaks and even yoga.

Alpine modern is a good way to describe Hotel Born’s décor, with extensive use of rich woods including unique ceiling “canopies” over the beds in all 200 guest rooms and suites. Make sure to check out the art throughout the hotel but especially on the small shelves in hallways and mini-murals in guest-room closets that are sure to make you smile and were painted by Jonathan Lamb and Michael Ortiz, who own Like Minded Productions and run the Colorado Crush Festival, along with JB Snyder.

Groups going off-site for a performance or dinner can reconvene for unique handcrafted cocktails at the bar that is adjacent to Citizen Rail that specializes in rustic wood-fired fare and dry aging its own meats and also handles room service and catering for groups.

It’s easy to hop on RTD’s Free MallRide to quickly get to Larimer Square, where we tried a variety of new spring menu items at Tamayo featuring varied regional cuisines of Mexico such as Oaxacan salmon with spiced mole negro, sautéed calabacitas, hojo santa, baby radish and pepitas. It was treat to sample terrific cocktails and tasty dishes and to meet Executive Chef Oscar Padilla, who delivered an amazing dessert to our table. Not only was the main dining area hopping, the upstairs private dining space and adjoining terrace with views of the Rocky Mountains were fully booked for gatherings. Check out the options.

When I’m headed to Denver from the mountains where I live to spend some time and catch a flight from Denver International Airport like in this instance, I’m reminded that staying and meeting in the metro area has never been easier, especially with the addition of the A Line commuter rail line that runs between DIA and Union Station downtown. It’s only a 37-minute ride to downtown on clean, efficient trains at a cost of only $9 one way. Beth Harty, director of sales and marketing for Hotel Born, uses FaceTime or Skype to electronically walk outside with prospective clients and show them how extremely close it is to Union Station and the train.

Keep expecting new, distinct and memorable from Denver as it’s a trio of characteristics that just keep on thriving and expanding in Colorado’s capital city.

Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center recently announced the addition of Director of Food & Beverage Saddiq Mir and Executive Chef Fabian Ludwig to its culinary team.
