Wendy Ratkin was recently hired as the director of catering and conference services for The Curtis Hotel in Denver.

1. What are you most looking forward to in your new role as director of catering and conference services?

First and foremost working for Sage! I have tried for three years to get on board with an amazing locally grown company that is such an industry leader.  I love leading a team of very talented individuals with fun, quirky, brilliant and crazy ideas.  They have a very strong work ethic; they love what they do and who they do it for and it shows in all they do. Their relationships with their clients are exceptional ,and I am learning so much from them. I also look forward to working with them on honing their skills so I can watch them spread their wings and move into more advanced careers in the industry. I finally feel like I am at home and get to be quirky me!

2. How do you think your past experience has prepared you for this role?

Working in very traditional corporate properties, from large-scale motorcycle events to the casino industry, on the operations side to the sales side, I have had to wear many hats. I understand what it takes to take care of the client from the minute they walk into the door to the minute they say goodbye. Seeing how events are done from the city, to the Florida beaches to the mountains has allowed me to learn from many people in the industry and I get to share my knowledge with a new team.

3. What goals do you have in mind for the company and your career growth for this year and farther down the line?

The Curtis is known for its pop-culture quirky vibe. I want to share that that with clients I have worked with at other locations, new clients and expand into the ethnic and non-profit markets.  The Curtis has so much to offer from a great event planning team, to the culinary delights of our chefs to the amazing service our guests will receive will hosting their events on property. For me personally, I am looking forward to learning from a great leadership team and host some amazing out of the box events—I have found my home. I am looking forward to a long career with Sage and the Curtis!

4. What do you enjoy most about your career?

I love what I do….pretty simple! I love working with people, planning events and making sure everyone leaves with a smile on their faces, happy and eager to return. I love learning new aspects of my job and developing my team!

Chef Adam Vero joined Hearth & Dram in Denver as executive chef last year and recruited Jeff Hickman as his chef de cuisine. Both previously worked for TAG Restaurant Group, also located in Denver. The duo has created inventive new menus at Hearth & Dram and reimagined the “Whole Beast Feast,” a group dining event for 10-12 participants that is designed to showcase the eatery’s nose-to-tail philosophy. Five to seven courses are prepared on a sevenfoot, wood-fired grill and served family style to highlight the team’s culinary abilities and no-waste philosophy.
